FAQ's

Here are the answers to some common questions we hear. If you don't see the information you need, please contact us by email at info@fluxstudioreddeer.ca

How do I sign up for classes?

All classes are booked on-line through the website. Go to the Classes page for information on each of the classes offered. If there is no Book button, the class has not opened for booking yet. Don't wait to book as most of the classes fill up fairly fast!

How old do I have to be to take a class at Flux?

You have to be at least 18 to take a class or use the studio. The City of Red Deer offers ceramics classes for kids and teens and the amazing Erin and Megan at Artribute School also teach teen and kids art classes with a ceramics component. We are extremely lucky to have full ceramics programs at both public high schools in Red Deer as well.

Go to Artribute School website

How will I know when classes open for booking?

If you subscribe to the newsletter you will receive regular...ok, somewhat regular, updates on events happening at the studio, class booking dates/times, as well as a general "what's happening" at Flux. We only send out newsletters when we have something important to share!

I took a class at Flux. How long will it be until I can pick up my pieces?

For each piece we tidy up the bottom, slow dry it to prevent cracking, bisque fire it to over 1000 degrees Celsius, wax the bottom, and glaze it. After it's glazed it goes back in the kiln for a final firing of over 1200 degrees Celsius. The entire process usually takes about 3-4 weeks. You will receive an email at the address used to book the class about scheduling a time to pick up your pieces only when all the pieces from your class have made it through the kiln. Please do not come to the studio without an appointment! It is not open to the public and for the safety and security of the studio members they are asked not to open the door for anyone.

Do you have classes for beginners?

We have classes for all skill levels! Please read each class description to see if it is a good fit for you. The projects change slightly for every session so you can take the Intro classes as many times as you want to learn new skills as well as build on the skills you've already learned. We offer workshops by different artists a couple of times a year for those with intermediate to advanced skills. Watch the newsletter for more information.

6

Can I book a private class for a group of friends or co-workers?

Yes! We do offer private bookings when 8 week classes are not in session. If you have a group of 8-12 people and are interested in a private class please email info@fluxstudioreddeer.ca for information and pricing.

What is a Quick Throw?

A Quick Throw is a fun, casual class designed as an introduction to throwing on the pottery wheel. It's a great class to take if you're not sure about ceramics and don't want to commit to an 8 week class just yet. It's also a blast to do with a couple of friends and a great way to meet other creative people.

What is the difference between throwing and hand-building?

Throwing refers to using the pottery wheel as a tool to form the clay.  Hand-building refers to using mainly your hands along with various other tools to form the clay. There are many different types of hand building techniques such as slab building, pinching, coiling and extruding just to name a few.
